Native to the European Balkan countries, lilacs are revered the world over. Young shoots of the lilac bush were tenderly carried along the Silk Road and soon after spread throughout Europe. Early French and Dutch settlers in the Americas rooted lilacs in the northern regions with enduring success. Just as the first rains after a long winter catch our attention, the distinctive scent of fresh blooming lilacs so beautifully heralds the beginning of spring.
