January 2021 Tarotscope

Welcome to 2021! Not only are we welcoming a fresh new orbit around the sun, but many planetary shifts are happening in the cosmos. Saturn has left Capricorn and entered Aquarius to remain until 2023. We also see Jupiter moving into Aquarius as well. This water bearing air sign rules the qualities of humanitarianism, revolution and change. While 2020 was a year of chaos and crumbling, 2021 is one of forward momentum and fresh new energies in the right direction. I always welcome the New Year with a fresh slate, full of hope. There is much to be optimistic about as we greet this new paradigm.

Be proud of all the work you’ve done this past year. I’m not sure if you took a moment to soak in Kim’s message of love, but please pause and do so. We’ve grown so much stronger together as a community respecting each other’s differences, cheering each other on and coming from a place of collaboration rather than competition. 2020 gave us many challenges and in that space we’ve grown. While the road ahead looks a lot less bumpy, be sure to bring the camaraderie with you in the coming months. Let the emotional lessons we’ve learned become the bedrock for a beautiful future.

Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 20) – The Sun
Are you having fun dancing in the sunlight of the spirit? Soak in those glorious rays! I love this card from the major arcana. It’s the personification of joy and exuberance. While you can’t exactly throw a huge party to celebrate these good vibes, there are many other ways to mark the occasion. Cap, you have a reputation for being a bit of a workaholic and it’s time to put that slightly obsessive behavior on the shelf for a minute. Your only job this month is to have fun! What does that look like for you? While at first it might be hard for you to stay away from email or stop answering the phone, try to lean into the party animal long forgotten. Tap into your teenage self who loved to drive around with the wind whipping through your hair and music blasting so loudly the car shook. Perhaps that’s exactly what you need. A tiny joy ride with no destination in mind. Where will you go? Who cares! It’ll force you to re-engage with the present, rather than focusing on the future, and drop into the moment. I can’t wait to see what souvenirs you collect and what experiences await you.

Aquarius (Jan 21-Feb 19) – The Hermit
The Hermit often gets a bad rap. It immediately conjures up someone hidden away on a mountaintop isolating from the rest of the world. Interestingly enough the Hermit is the most revered of all the major arcana. This wise sage asks us to quiet the mind and go within to find the answers. We are on a constant quest for external validation and The Hermit reminds us that contentment lives within. You are enough, you have enough and you do enough. There is nothing to fix and there is nothing to be ashamed of. You are showing up beautifully in this human form, living a life most would envy. Something The Hermit also seems to remind us about is gratitude. Do you practice gratitude everyday? Perhaps now is the time to start. Go ahead and purchase yourself a gratitude journal if you think that will help. It’s a great exercise to use as we start each and every day. Gratitude is the magic potion used by manifestors. Where our attention goes, energy flows. 2020 brought its stress and pushed many of us into fear and lack. Those days are over! Give yourself a hug and a pat on the back. You made it! And look around you. There is so much prosperity that surrounds you, even if not always in a monetary form.

Pisces (Feb 20-Mar 20) – The Lovers
Recently I had a client mention that they kept pulling this card even though they were single. “Does it have another meaning?” they wondered. I immediately thought about adoration of the self-love variety. However, my new favorite deck, Tarot Del Fuego offered a new perspective. He defines The Lovers as the balance between two forces. A lovely interpretation as much became unbalanced as we braved the rocky waves of yesteryear. How could you explore this conception of duality? What aspects of your life feel out of sync? Ricardo also attributes The Lovers to trials and tribulations overcome. What false beliefs will you leave behind in 2020? What new attitudes will you embrace for the year ahead? I find that New Year’s is a great opportunity for self-assessment. How did you meet your challenges? What could you have done differently? Where did you succeed? Where did you fail? As you take time for this honest self-appraisal remember one thing: this is not an invitation to berate yourself for wrongs done. No, the shame train has left the station. Anyone who made it this far in one piece already deserves a trophy for adulting. This is simply a way for you to recognize your strengths, review your emotional education and make a request to the magical universe ordering service. Be as specific as possible: what do you want out of life?

Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19) – Temperance
Patience is a virtue that not many have mastered dear Aries, but I think we’ve all gotten good practice lately. In order to step back into a contented and useful existence we had to let acceptance be our guide. Temperance is yet another call for endurance and concession. While you might storm into 2021 like the mighty ram you are, do not expect your mountains to move under your masterful maneuvers. While you’re so ready to “go back to normal,” the universe is asking you to pause and ask yourself why. What was so appealing about the ways things were? Was it more comfortable for you there? What have you been avoiding? Things will start to move ahead at rapid speed the moment you greet your skeletons in the closet with open arms. You’ll soon see that they aren’t nearly as scary as they were when they were floating around in your head. So if you needed a sign, this is it. Make that phone call. Have that uncomfortable conversation. Progress is never easy, but it’s always worth it.

Taurus (Apr 20-May 20) – The Hanged Man
I find this card, much like The Hermit, is easily misunderstood. Many decks define it as a sense of feeling blocked or stifled. Perhaps it’s time to look a little bit closer at The Hanged Man’s sly little grin. He isn’t trapped! No, not at all! He’s simply hanging upside down for a fresh new perspective. A wonderful card to pull as we welcome a new year! What conclusions have you jumped to in recent months that didn’t come true? Was your fortune telling in a positive or negative vein? I ask as we can often catastrophize things that never needed to be blown out of proportion. Someone who has helped me shift my attitude immensely is Byron Katie. She continuously asks, “Is it true? Is it really true?” A fun exercise in exposing the fear mongers that live inside our head. For example, you might say “I don’t have any money,” but is that really true? Perhaps you don’t have as much as you think you should or would like to have, but I’m guessing if you’re reading this you have enough. Katie encourages us to reevaluate the truth so we can see the environment within which we reside at an honest angle. It helps us recognize that the only thing standing between us and serenity is our thoughts. What type of practices will you partake in this month to quiet the mind and see things more clearly?

Gemini (May 21-Jun 21) – The Tower
Just when you thought it was over…it’s just begun. The Tower is always an indication of sudden upheaval and change. For you January will carry the reverberations of 2020 with it like a soft echo. Perhaps you’ve been holding onto something so tightly it’s about to snap. Sometimes our Guides need to step in and shake things up to redirect us on the right path. I find The Tower’s energy is often unpleasant, however it’s completely necessary. Pain is always the touchstone for growth. Think about it. If everything in your life is coming up roses you don’t have the intense drive to better yourself or your surroundings. When things start to fall apart it wakes you up from the dream and has you reevaluating everything, often in a positive direction. What is the one thing that you can’t seem to overcome? Are you still trying to figure it out all by yourself? Perhaps it’s time to surrender and ask the Universe to take the wheel. You might be surprised at what happens next. When we get out of our own way and abide to our highest Self that is when the magic starts to happen.

Cancer (Jun 22-July 23) – The Star
The Star almost universally is the tarot’s sign for hope. Bring this beautiful, pure and optimistic energy with you this month Cancer. I’ve never found a sign more adaptable, more loving or more nurturing. However you also happen to be one of the signs that is the most fearful. You keep wanting to crawl back into your shell. It’s comfortable there! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there is nothing to fear but fear itself. (And yes, I borrowed that quote from someone famous). I think your heart is so enormous that you often pick up on the energies of those closest to you. What can you start to do to protect yourself? Is it more time alone? Is it healthier boundaries? Is it long overdue to cut the cord with someone who no longer supports your greatest purpose? While I applaud you for letting your heart lead the way, it can sometimes get you into trouble. Don’t let those with negative energy drag you down or dim your light. Start to surround yourself with those on the same playing field who honor your magic and applaud your success. That is your soul group and they are calling you home. They love you unconditionally and want you to shine your light in all its glory.

Leo (Jul 24 – Aug 23) – Justice
This card always immediately conjures up images of a lady liberty with her scale. It reminds us about balance and karma. January is a time when you’ll start to see things realign and come back around, often with you doing absolutely nothing to expedite the process. However, something that may help things become more realigned is to offer yourself and those around you some grace. Absolutely no one is perfect! We often take things personally instead of recognizing that others around us are showing up the best they can with what they’ve got. It becomes fascinating when you start to recognize that many possess no self-awareness or no tools. Instead of becoming resentful of their actions could you show them sympathy and understanding? How could you serve as a beacon of exemplary behavior in a non-condensing manner? I find that when others are agitated the most important thing we can do is to help them feel seen. Try this: “I hear you and I want to understand.” Repeat back to them what you just heard and ask them if you got it right. It often diffuses the tension immediately. And while you might not agree with their statement you don’t always have to interject your argument. Instead of telling someone they are a fool for their political views try asking questions. Start with “I’d really love to know more about you and why you feel that way.” You will dive much deeper into the spiritual well of love and abundance when you greet your foes with curiosity than aggression.

Virgo (Aug 24-Sep 22) – Judgement
“Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” is a perfect quote to summarize the energy of the Judgement card. It reminds us that judgement serves a purpose until it’s used in excess. We need to be able to judge if it’s safe to cross the street or if the stove is hot. However, it’s lost its proper function when we judge Becky because her car has a dent in it or her house needs a paint job. When did idle gossip about others’ misfortunes become a thing? Next time you see someone in a position of suffering be sure to mind your tongue and instead stretch out your arm. How can you be kind and useful to those around you? Would you be open to participating in some volunteer work this month? It will be valuable exercise in more ways than one. Not only will you learn the fultily of judgement, but you will truly understand the abundance that exists in your life. You will also come to understand that the reason you judge others so harshly is because of the way you judge yourself. Could you start to offer yourself some compassion? Let’s give all of us more space to be human. Be sure to start with yourself.

Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22) – The Devil
Sweet Libra I find that you worry a bit too much. You rarely are concerned about yourself but spend countless hours deliberating over the affairs of those around you. The Devil reminds us that obsessive thinking has no objective but our downfall. It can quickly lead to depression and addiction. Have you engaged in a bit of codependency? Where does the line get crossed between being helpful and being forceful? Perhaps you’ve been busying your mind with the details as the reality of a current situation is too heavy to handle. I ask you to redirect your attention to the place it matters most: self-care. I think you would benefit greatly from a day on the couch under a weighted blanket watching reruns of your favorite reality tv show. You need to shut the negative chatter off or it will consume you. Another way I find I’m truly able to clear my mind is through exercise. Try going for a walk around the block once a day every day this month. Get to a place where you are huffing and puffing a bit. The expression, move a muscle, change a thought, is a powerful credo that you should adhere to in the coming days. For you’re no help to those in distress, when you can’t even help yourself. Do your best to cradle yourself in love.

Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 22) – The Magician
Scorpio the thought of black magic immediately comes to mind after I pulled this card for you. Black magic is when you utilize the powers that be for your own selfish gains. Sometimes necessary where there is evil amiss, however you can put down the sword and pick up the wand. The arduous lessons are now behind us and benevolence reigns supreme. Perhaps it’s time to engage in some white magic instead which is infinitely stronger in force. Magic of the white variety asks you to align your will with those of the supernatural. Have you checked in with your Guides lately to ensure your aspirations are on track? While we love to distract ourselves with the comings and goings of those around us, it’s simply a way to pull you from your true purpose. You have many gifts to offer this world. This month I encourage you to cultivate your intuition and your magic. What does that look like? Let creativity be your guide. Whether you engage in spell work, meditation, ritual, or art ask to be a channel of peace. Let the universal truths flow through you and out into the world. Stop focusing on the weaknesses of others and instead focus on your strengths.

Sagittarius (Nov 23-Dec 20) – The Chariot
Wild and free is when we see you at your best dear Sagittarius. Much like The Chariot you are the stallion craving to run aimlessly through the endless prairies. January is your opportunity to tap in deeply to your natural qualities. Rule followers are having a really hard time right now as they watch the structures they built fall to the ground. Teach those around you how to let go of rigid thinking and embrace the chaos. Eat ice cream for breakfast. Host Zoom calls in ball gowns. Skip around your neighbor like a toddler rather than commit to a face-paced power walk. Pay for the person behind you in the drive-thru (and be sure to tip the Barista). Find little ways to let your childlike energies out to play in order to bring joy to anyone who comes in your path. Maybe it’s about buying two bundles of flowers at the grocery store and bringing one to the cashier. Buy a huge amount of donuts and drop them off at the local hospital for the healthcare workers. Have fun in this happiness experiment. How many lives could you touch this month? How many smiles could you bring?
